The historic tidal island and medieval abbey of Mont Saint-Michel is the most visited site in France outside of Paris. I had to spend a night there to see it for myself.
Mont Saint-Michel is renowned for its striking medieval abbey, which sits atop a rocky outcrop and is surrounded by narrow streets and buildings. The abbey was originally built as a monastery in the 8th century and has since served as a place of pilgrimage and a symbol of spiritual, military and architectural significance. Mont Saint-Michel is also notable for its unique tidal phenomenon, where the island is sometimes connected to the mainland by a land bridge during low tide and surrounded by water during high tide, adding to its mystique and allure. The site attracts millions of visitors each year, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in France. I had the privilege of staying overnight and photographing at sunrise and sunset, of the tides and abbey, this architectural wonder of the world and UNESCO heritage site. One night wasn't enough.
