Women Breakaway in Rodeo
Driving Route 66 one hot, dusty afternoon in early August 2022 I became road-weary and stopped at a highway diner in Gallup, NM for a bit of a stretch. I saw an advertisement for the 100th Intertribal Indian Ceremonial. Curious and in no rush to get anywhere I wanted to see what this was all about. It became one of the most memorable afternoons of my cross country road trip.
For 100 years of summers, Native American tribes across America have gathered in Gallup, NM to celebrate their heritage in dances, parades, art shows, songs, pageants...and rodeo competition. This year would be slightly different...women would now be allowed to compete with men in rodeo. I'm thankful to be in the right place at the right time to capture this moment in history. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them.
